IATSE Local 884 and Local 44 unions prepare to merge by year end
Two IATSE unions representing studio teachers and property craftspeople are set to combine their operations before the end of this year.
Member votes approve consolidation plan
Sources indicate that eighty-five percent of Local 884 members voted yes on the merger earlier this month. Additionally, ninety percent of Local 44 members supported the combination a few weeks prior to the first vote. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed these approval figures following the internal member ballots.
Operations shift to Valley Village
Local 884 will move its administrative functions to the Valley Village headquarters currently held by Local 44. The smaller union previously lacked a dedicated office while relying heavily on volunteer staff for daily tasks. Local 44 members will gain studio teacher representation on its executive board and delegate lists.
Union sizes differ significantly
Local 44 represents nearly 7,000 workers including propmakers and set decorators according to Department of Labor filings. In contrast, Local 884 had only 106 members as of its 2025 filing with the agency. The larger union was chartered in 1939 while the teacher-focused group received its charter in 1960.
