HBO Harry Potter series recasts major roles with younger actors
HBO is adapting J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels into a TV series this Christmas with a new cast for the first two books.
Main characters receive new actors
Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson will not reprise their roles in the HBO adaptation. Dominic McLaughlin is set to play Harry Potter while Arabella Stanton takes the part of Hermione Granger. Alastair Stout has been announced as the actor for Ron Weasley.
Adult roles cast with younger stars
John Lithgow will portray Headmaster Albus Dumbledore instead of Richard Harris or Michael Gambon. Janet McTeer is confirmed to play Professor Minerva McGonagall following Maggie Smith. Paapa Essiedu has been selected for the role of Professor Severus Snape.
Supporting cast includes familiar faces
Nick Frost will appear as Gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid in place of Robbie Coltrane. Katherine Parkinson is set to play Molly Weasley rather than Julie Walters. The show aims to stick closer to the characters ages found in the books.
