Fujifilm sells new 40TB LTO-10 tapes for $494
Fujifilm has begun selling its new 40TB LTO-10 Ultrium tape cartridges for enterprise archival needs.
Capacity and transfer speeds
Each cartridge holds a native capacity of 40TB, which expands to 100TB when standard compression is applied. The uncompressed transfer rate reaches 440MB per second, rising to 1,100MB per second with compression factored in.
Storage technology and security
The storage medium uses Barium Ferrite particles to improve magnetic stability and extend the archival lifespan of the data. Fujifilm also included AES-256 encryption within the cartridge design to meet FIPS 197 compliance standards required by government buyers.
Theoretical music storage limit
A single tape could theoretically store roughly 13 million songs based on an average file size of 3MB per track. This capacity places the new format well ahead of most enterprise SATA hard drives that typically max out around 250 to 290MB/s.
