Danny Boyle film Ink recreates 1969 Fleet Street newsroom with vintage equipment
Danny Boyle's new film Ink will premiere at the London Film Festival and open in theaters on Dec. 11.
Production team recreates historic setting
Director Danny Boyle enlisted production designers Gareth Pugh and Carson McColl to build a specific vision for the movie. They aimed to reset expectations for period films by making the 1969 setting feel immediate rather than distant. The crew faced challenges because much of the original Fleet Street location no longer exists in its 1969 form.
Cast portrays key newspaper figures
Guy Pearce plays a brash version of Rupert Murdoch while Jack O'Connell portrays editor Larry Lamb. The story traces the rise of Murdoch and the takeover of The Sun newspaper in London. These characters helped remake the publication into a populist juggernaut during the film's timeline.
Filming location found in Bromley
The production team ultimately secured a space in Bromley, U.K., to stand in for the original offices. This location allowed them to install functional Linotype machines and old typewriters for the newsroom scenes. The print press set was placed in the basement of the recreated offices.
