Croydon council housing project wins UK best building award
Lion Green Road in Coulsdon has been named Britain's best new building after delivering 157 homes on a steeply sloping site.

Design and location details
The development features pink and brown brick towers designed by Mary Duggan Architects with Ruff Architects. It sits sheltered by mature trees while overlooking allotments, playgrounds and the rolling hills of south London.
Award history and context
This project joins Goldsmith Street in Norwich as one of only two council housing schemes to win the RIBA Stirling prize. The award comes while the government plans to invest £39bn into the housing sector.
Previous council efforts
The win validates Croydon council's former housebuilding company, Brick by Brick, which operated before going bankrupt in 2020. That earlier experiment saw numerous projects cancelled after the administration ceased operations.
