Costume designers discuss difficulty of contemporary film design at SCAD Savannah Film Festival
Molly Rogers and five other costume designers spoke about the challenges of modern character dressing at the Costume Design Roundtable during the SCAD Savannah Film Festival.

Shopping is not the main task
Molly Rogers stated that contemporary design involves deep storytelling rather than just shopping. She told an audience that expressing a desire to learn by shopping results in an automatic exit from her consideration.
Designers document historical periods through clothes
Ellen Mirojnick explained that early career work allowed her to document what New York was like at specific times. She noted that creating these elevated contemporary characters also documented the history of the people involved.
New York style differs from Chicago
Marci Rodgers recalled asking Spike Lee to sit with her during background casting because she knew New York styles differed from Chicago. She wanted to see how people were coming into the set to understand those differences.
