CNN launches direct-to-consumer streaming service in Canada starting October 20
CNN will begin selling its All Access premium subscription service to Canadian consumers on October 20.
New pricing and access details
Canadian subscribers can pay CAN$7.99 a month or CAN$79.99 annually for the service. This introductory price includes live streaming video, the news division's library of content, and full access to digital products. Existing cable TV customers will continue to receive CNN through their traditional linear packages.
Response to changing market trends
The move addresses a decline in traditional linear TV revenue north of the border. Young Canadians are increasingly cutting the cable cord, prompting this shift toward subscription video-on-demand models. CNN CEO Mark Thompson leads the strategy to reach viewers directly rather than relying on cable deals.
Industry context for Canadian broadcasters
Cable and telco giant Rogers Communications recently decided not to renew its broadcast of Saturday night NHL games on CBC. The public broadcaster had hosted this tradition since 1952 before the shift occurred. Rogers will instead move those games to its own Sports network.
