Initial contact at Fox News

Harris first gained attention in 2020 when he published a book about Oculus founder Palmer Luckey. Right-wing commentators like Glenn Beck gave Harris platforms that helped his book succeed and led to an offer to write a biography. Harris politely declined the initial request but began considering other public figures for research.

Epiphany during a shower

The author started thinking about how Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm shaped his worldview while taking a shower. He decided to write about the man behind those shows, Larry David. Harris describes the resulting book as one of the most begrudgingly authorised biographies ever written.

Comedian tolerates the project

Larry David allowed Harris to proceed with the biography despite his initial reluctance. The final work is titled Emperor of Nothing: The Making of Larry David. Harris explains that there was no interest in him from the start.
