Studio takes over animation duties

DNEG Animation assumed responsibility for the film after Sony Pictures Animation completed the first two movies. The studio could not transfer proprietary tools from the previous productions to its own pipeline. VFX supervisor Patrick Harboun stated that the team had to start reconstruction from a bare digital model.

Character design respects fan expectations

The new version of Red features slightly softer plumage and firmer surfaces on his eyes and beak. This approach avoids a radical makeover while keeping the character familiar to the audience. Harboun noted that popular intellectual property belongs to fans and requires respect rather than arbitrary changes.

Automation system covers most shots

The studio developed a system that automated character effects work on roughly 75 percent of the film shots. This technical solution helped manage the workload during the reconstruction process for the upcoming Paramount release.
