Director sought billionaire interview

Gibney and producer Jessie Deeter reached out to the tech billionaire multiple times for comments. Deeter possessed Musk's cellphone number and email address but received a written rejection on Twitter. The director stated that Musk responded by writing Gibney is a douche.

Studio faced legal threats

The film features an avatar of the billionaire since he does not appear in person. Previous reports indicated the studio intended to proceed with an international release despite SpaceX legal actions. Gibney confirmed that Universal ultimately decided on the overseas distribution plan.

Colleagues blocked access

Many friends and business colleagues refused to speak with the production team without permission. Musk's former girlfriend Ashley St Clair and his first wife Justine Musk served as major sources. The director noted that others could not talk because Elon would not give them permission.
