Market expectations for a rate increase

Financial experts and bankers largely anticipate a 50-basis-point hike in interest rates during the scheduled meeting. Most analysts believe this move is necessary to address rising inflation driven by costly oil imports linked to the Middle East conflict. A poll conducted by Topline Securities shows that 61% of market participants expect the policy rate to rise, with 54% specifically predicting a 50bps increase.

Inflation data and global pressures

Headline inflation rose to 11.1% in August from 9.2% in July according to recent domestic macroeconomic data. The committee noted that the prolonged Middle East conflict has increased global commodity prices while supply chain disruptions persist. Analysts warn that looming geopolitical tensions could push inflation higher and prompt further central bank action.

Balancing growth and monetary stability

Some experts argue a 50bps hike offers a sensible middle ground to acknowledge changing risks without unnecessarily damaging economic growth. Others suggest a larger 100bps increase might be required to effectively tame rising inflation caused by external shocks. The central bank currently faces the challenge of managing these pressures while preserving confidence in the financial system.
