SECP proposes national agricultural spot market to link farmers with finance

The Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan chairman proposed a national agricultural spot market on Thursday at an international conference in Islamabad.

Digital platform connects stakeholders

Dr Kabir Ahmed Sidhu suggested creating a common digital trading platform to connect farmers, warehouses, banks and buyers. This system would use standardised grading, transparent bidding and electronic warehouse receipts to modernise agricultural trade. Provincial authorities would keep regulatory oversight while the commission facilitates the technological framework.

Aims to reduce losses

The proposal seeks to secure better prices for growers and expand access to financing for agriculture. Estimates indicate post-harvest losses range between 20% and 40%, representing a significant economic drain. Improving storage and handling infrastructure could preserve substantial value while improving farmers earnings.

Economic significance of sector

Agriculture contributes 23.44 per cent to Pakistan's gross domestic product according to the chairman. The estimated value of the country's crops stands at around Rs8.8 trillion. Reforms in agricultural markets are important for the entire economy.
