Pakistan inflation rises slightly on higher electricity and food costs

The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics released data on Friday showing a slight rise in the Sensitive Price Index for the week ending September 24.

Weekly index increase details

The Sensitive Price Index rose by 0.99 percent on a week-on-week basis. This increase was driven primarily by an 18.76 percent hike in electricity prices for Q1. Other items contributing to the rise included eggs, LPG, and various meat products.

Vegetable prices dropped significantly, with tomatoes falling by 13.45 percent and potatoes declining by 8.33 percent. Onions saw a price reduction of 2.42 percent while diesel prices decreased by 1.57 percent. A total of 21 items in the basket remained stable during this period.

Short-term inflation measured year-on-year surged by 11.92 percent for the week ending September 24. Officials attribute this annual growth mainly to persistent increases in food and energy prices. The index has recorded double-digit growth over several consecutive weeks.
