Pakistan approves final draft of automotive industry policy focusing on localisation and EVs
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the final draft of Pakistan's Automotive Industry Policy in Islamabad on Saturday for submission to the Federal Cabinet.

Policy aims at structural change
Adviser Haroon Akhtar Khan announced that the policy addresses structural challenges within the sector. Officials stated the goal is to create a competitive, export-oriented industry that integrates locally. The government previously noted that past policies over the last decade failed to achieve desired export growth.
Focus on manufacturing and safety
The adviser emphasized that localisation remains a top priority for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Authorities want to move beyond importing completely built units or assembling kits without building a domestic base. The draft also includes measures to improve vehicle safety standards and encourage electric vehicle adoption.
Federal Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed the development was presented at a press conference on Saturday. The approved document will now go to the Federal Cabinet for formal consideration. This process marks an important step toward establishing economic self-reliance in the automotive sector.
