Aaron Rai shot a six-under-par 66 to finish with seven birdies. Sweden's Joakim Lagergren also posted a score of 66, including an eagle on the 12th hole. The two players now share the top spot on the leaderboard.
McIlroy finishes three shots back
Rory McIlroy started strongly but his round unraveled on the back nine. He found water on his penultimate hole and ended the day at three under par. This result placed him third on the leaderboard behind Rai and Lagergren.
Other players finish near top
Adam Scott tied with Ryan Gerard, Ludvig Åberg and Nacho Elvira for third place with a score of 67. Patrick Reed finished at seven under par to tie for seventh heading into the second round.
